Juliusspital Weingut

One of Germany's oldest charitable wine estates, with a cellar bar in the historic hospital complex

The Juliusspital is one of three great charitable wine estates in Würzburg, each with vineyards that have been maintained for centuries to fund social institutions. The Juliusspital's vineyards cover around 170 hectares across some of the finest sites in Franken, and the wine — particularly the Silvaner and Riesling from the Würzburger Stein and Julius-Echter-Berg sites — is among the best in Germany.

The historic complex on Juliuspromenade includes a pharmacy, a chapel, and the wine cellars. The estate's wine bar, the Vinothek, is the most convenient place in Würzburg to try a range of Franken wines side by side. The Scheurebe, a dry aromatic variety that Juliusspital handles particularly well, is worth seeking out here alongside the more famous Silvaner.

A story
The Juliusspital was founded in 1576 by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn as a hospital for the poor, and it has operated continuously as a welfare institution ever since. To fund the hospital's work, the foundation was given vineyard land — and today the Juliusspital estate, with 170 hectares of some of the best Franken vineyard sites, is one of the three largest charitable wine estates in Germany, alongside the Bürgerspital in Würzburg and the Staatlicher Hofkeller in the Residenz.
