Würzburg is compact and walkable. The Residenz, the cathedral, and the Alte Mainbrücke are all within a few minutes of each other in the old town. The Marienberg Fortress across the river is reached on foot via the bridge in about twenty minutes. The wine culture pervades everything — the Brückenschoppen tradition of drinking a glass on the bridge at sunset is unmissable in summer.
