The Kunsthalle is Bremen's main art museum, a neoclassical building on Am Wall facing the old city moat. The collection is broad but particularly strong in 19th and early 20th-century European painting — Delacroix, Courbet, and a substantial group of works by Paula Modersohn-Becker, the Expressionist painter associated with the Worpswede artists' colony outside Bremen. The prints and drawings collection is one of the most comprehensive in Germany.
The building reopened after a major renovation and the permanent collection is well-presented. The museum also runs a strong programme of temporary exhibitions. If your interest lies specifically in Modersohn-Becker, her dedicated museum in the Böttcherstrasse is more focused, but the Kunsthalle has the better collection overall. Closed Mondays.
