Eating Out

Bremen's eating scene clusters around a few distinct areas. The Schnoorviertel and nearby streets have small independent restaurants in tight medieval settings. The Schlachte waterfront is more tourist-oriented but good for outdoor dining in summer. Österviertel, east of the university, is the best area for local independent restaurants and cafes.

Traditional Bremen dishes include Labskaus (a sailor's hash of corned beef, beetroot, potato, and pickled herring topped with a fried egg), Knipp (a pork and oat sausage served with fried potatoes), and fresh North Sea fish — particularly herring preparations.
