Universum Science Center

The Universum is an interactive science museum on the university campus north of the Altstadt, housed in a dramatically shaped building clad in stainless steel scales. The permanent exhibition covers humanity, the earth, and the cosmos across three sections, with hands-on experiments designed for adults as much as for children.

It is a good half-day destination for visitors who have covered the Altstadt, and especially worthwhile when travelling with children. Reachable by tram from the centre.

A story
The Universum's building was designed to look like a giant silver whale lying on the waterfront — the 40,000 stainless steel scales on the exterior reference both marine biology and space-age futurism. The site also hosts the only civilian microgravity drop tower in Europe, used for scientific research.
