The Strandperle, on the Elbe beach at the eastern end of Övelgönne, is a small wooden kiosk and the closest Hamburg gets to a proper riverside sundowner. There are no chairs — beach-goers sprawl on the sand with plastic glasses of Astra (the local St. Pauli pilsner) — and the kiosk turns out Fischbrötchen and sausages until early evening.
The view is the point: the entire Hamburg container port stretches across the river opposite, with cranes loading the world's largest ships against the sunset. Take the 62 ferry to Neumühlen and walk five minutes east; or come down through the Treppenviertel from Övelgönne S-Bahn. Best avoided in cold or wet weather — there is no real shelter.
