The main shopping street is the Mönckebergstrasse, running from the Hauptbahnhof to the Rathaus, with department stores and chain shops. Spitalerstrasse, just off it, is more of the same. For the smarter end — designer fashion, jewellery, and a string of arcades like Hanseviertel and Bleichenhof — head for Neuer Wall and Grosse Bleichen between the Binnenalster and the centre.
Independent shops and second-hand are concentrated in Ottensen (Altona), the Schanzenviertel, and Eppendorf. The Markthalle near the Hauptbahnhof has antiques and a small flea market. The Alstertal Einkaufszentrum out in Poppenbüttel is the largest mall.
