Chilehaus

Iconic Expressionist office tower shaped like a ship's prow

The most famous building of Hamburg's interwar Kontorhaus quarter, designed by Fritz Höger in 1924 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ten storeys of dark brick taper to a sharp eastern point that genuinely resembles the prow of an ocean liner. Built for Henry Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpetre with Chile, the building marked the high point of North German Brick Expressionism. Still in use as offices; the courtyard is open during business hours.
