Hamburg's principal art museum, occupying three connected buildings between the Hauptbahnhof and the Alster. The collection runs from medieval altarpieces through 19th-century German Romantics — Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is here — to a strong holding of modern and contemporary art in the cube-shaped Galerie der Gegenwart. Allow a half day; closed Mondays.
