The Oberhafen-Kantine, an Edwardian dockside canteen leaning visibly to one side, has been serving plain workers' food on the Hamburg riverside since 1925. The brick-and-clinker building was thrown together for the harbour's dockers and never gentrified; it has stayed open through generations of owners and is now a small cult favourite among visitors who like their food cheap and honest.
The menu sticks to one-page north-German classics: Labskaus, herring fillets with sour cream and apple, plate-sized Schnitzel, Pannfisch (pan-fried cod). Service is gruff and quick, prices modest, and the wonky floors are part of the experience. Walk-in works most lunchtimes; evenings are tighter.
