St. Petri

Hamburg's oldest church; 1342 lion's-head knocker is city's oldest artwork

The oldest of Hamburg's five principal churches, on the Mönckebergstrasse just across from St. Jakobi. The current neo-Gothic building dates from after the 1842 fire, but the door knocker on the bronze main doors — a lion's head from 1342 — is the oldest piece of art in the city. Climb the tower for a view over the centre.
