Alt-Sachsenhausen Apfelwein Walk

The handful of cobbled streets around Klappergasse, Wallstrasse and Schweizer Strasse in Alt-Sachsenhausen are the densest concentration of apple wine taverns in Germany — perhaps a dozen working houses within five minutes' walk of each other. A traditional Frankfurt evening means hopping between three or four of them: a stop for the first bembel at one, food at another, dessert and the last round somewhere else.

A sensible itinerary: start at Atschel for the food (book ahead), wander to Zum gemalten Haus for the next round, finish at Dauth-Schneider on Klappergasse. Avoid the more touristy stretch of Wallstrasse if you can — the apple wine is the same but the prices and the noise level are not. In summer aim for places with courtyards or street tables; in winter the wood-panelled interiors are part of the appeal.
