Zum gemalten Haus

Zum gemalten Haus — "to the painted house" — is named for the elaborately frescoed facade of its building on Schweizer Strasse, depicting scenes from the Romantic poet Friedrich Stoltze's apple wine drinking songs. Inside, it is one of Sachsenhausen's most theatrical apple wine taverns: high ceilings, long benches, a fountain in the middle of the dining room, and waitstaff who deliver the bembel of cider with deliberate ceremony.

The food is conservative classic Frankfurter cooking with no concessions to modernity — pork knuckle, Hähnchen (roast chicken), Rippchen, with the obligatory Grüne Sosse on demand. The pub is popular with groups and tour buses, which is the only downside; book ahead for a table on Friday or Saturday evening. Schweizer Strasse 67.
