Eating Out

Fulda's restaurant scene is solid for a city of its size, with a concentration of cafes and restaurants around the cathedral square and the pedestrian zones of the old town. Hessian cuisine appears on most menus — Grüne Soße (the Frankfurt herb sauce that also belongs to this region), Handkäse mit Musik (fermented cheese with oil and vinegar), and various pork preparations are typical. The regional Rhön specialities — Rhön lamb, game from the forests, and hearty farmhouse dishes — appear at some restaurants.

The Domplatz and the streets immediately around it have the highest concentration of cafes and restaurants. For a quick lunch or coffee, the pedestrianised Bahnhofstrasse leading from the station to the cathedral quarter has several good options. Fulda also has a wine bar scene that is better than you might expect — the city's ecclesiastical history brought sophisticated tastes, and wine from the Rheingau and Mosel is taken seriously here.
