Offenbach am Main

Main River city beside Frankfurt, marked by leather industry heritage, design schools, and multicultural street life.

Offenbach am Main sits directly across the river from Frankfurt and is very much its own city despite being swallowed by the same metropolitan sprawl. It has the highest proportion of foreign residents of any large German city — over a third of its population — which gives it a genuinely multicultural character, particularly visible in its food scene and street life.

The city's industrial past centred on leather goods, and the Deutsches Ledermuseum (German Leather Museum) remains one of the more unusual specialist museums in Germany. Design has stayed part of the city's identity: the Klingspor Museum holds an excellent collection of book art and typography. Along the riverfront, old factories are slowly converting into studios and offices, and the Mainuferpark offers a pleasant walk with Frankfurt's skyline across the water.

Guide

Getting There

Offenbach is part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main S-Bahn network and is effectively a suburb of Frankfurt in transport terms. S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S8, and S9 all pass through Offenbach Hauptbahnhof, connecting to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. The journey from Frankfurt Airport takes about 40 minutes on the S-Bahn.

By car from Frankfurt city centre, cross the river via the Deutschherrnbrücke or Ignatz-Bubis-Brücke — the city is less than 10 km east of Frankfurt centre. Driving is the less pleasant option given parking constraints in the city centre.
