The grand neo-classical spa house, completed in 1907 by Munich architect Friedrich von Thiersch, is the centrepiece of Wiesbaden's Belle Époque quarter — a colonnaded facade facing the Bowling Green lawns, a vast domed hall inside, and a casino that has been part of the city since the late 18th century. Dostoevsky famously lost his shirt here and drew on the experience for The Gambler.
