Museum Wiesbaden

The Museum Wiesbaden combines two strong collections in one neo-classical building south of the centre: an excellent natural history department, and a fine art collection that includes the most important holdings of the Russian-born Expressionist Alexej von Jawlensky outside Russia. Jawlensky spent the last 20 years of his life in Wiesbaden and died in the city in 1941; the museum has nearly 100 of his paintings, drawings, and prints.

The fine art galleries also cover German Romanticism, Jugendstil, and post-war art, with works by Caspar David Friedrich, Max Beckmann, and Joseph Beuys. The natural history wing is particularly strong on geology and zoology. Closed Mondays.
