Gorch Fock I (Museum Ship)

Historic three-masted sailing barque moored in Stralsund harbour, now a museum ship

The Gorch Fock I is a three-masted sailing barque built in 1933 as a training ship for the German Navy. It served across several German navies, was seized by the Soviet Union after the war, and was returned to Germany in 2003. Now moored in Stralsund harbour as a museum ship, it is open to visitors and gives a very good sense of what life was like aboard a large working sailing vessel in the mid-20th century.

Not to be confused with the Gorch Fock II, the current German Navy training ship, which occasionally visits Stralsund. The original vessel's restored interior includes the officers' quarters, crew berths, navigation equipment, and rigging that visitors can examine up close.
