Day Trip: Hiddensee Island

Car-free island accessible by ferry from Stralsund — beaches, heathland, and a clifftop lighthouse

Hiddensee is a small, narrow island west of Rügen, accessible only by ferry from Stralsund or Schaprode on Rügen. Cars are not permitted — the island is traversed on foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn cart. The result is a pace of life that feels genuinely removed from the mainland, and a landscape of dunes, heathland, sandy beaches, and fishing villages that has changed little in a century.

The northern tip (Dornbusch) is a chalk headland with a lighthouse and views across to the Swedish coast on clear days. The villages of Kloster, Vitte, and Neuendorf each have their own character. In summer the island is popular but never overwhelmingly crowded — its limited accommodation and the ferry-only access act as natural controls. Ferries from Stralsund take about 45 minutes to an hour.
