Dortmund's drinking culture is inseparable from its brewing history. The city was once Germany's largest beer-exporting city, and the Dortmunder Export style — a malty, full-bodied lager, less bitter than a Pilsner — is still brewed here. Most of the major industrial breweries (Dortmunder Union, DAB, Kronen) have merged or been absorbed by larger groups, but the style survives. The liveliest nightlife concentrates around the Kreuzviertel and the streets south of the Westenhellweg.
