Dortmund's food scene is unpretentious and hearty — this is the Ruhr, and people eat accordingly. Westphalian specialities (Pfefferpotthast, the medieval beef stew; Pumpernickel bread) appear on traditional menus, but the city's long history of labour migration from southern Europe, Turkey, and later the Middle East means you eat surprisingly well across a range of cuisines. The area around the Nordmarkt has the densest concentration of Turkish and Kurdish restaurants in the city.
