The Reinoldikirche is Dortmund's most important church and the de facto symbol of the city, its spire marking the Altmarkt at the historic centre. The building dates from the thirteenth century, though its current form reflects substantial reconstruction after wartime damage. The soaring Gothic nave is the finest medieval interior in the city.
Inside, look for the carved wooden statue of St Reinold (c. 1420), the patron saint whose legend is told above, and the late Gothic choir stalls. The church tower can be climbed for views over the city centre and, on clear days, across the flat Ruhr basin. The Altmarkt in front of the church hosts Dortmund's famous Christmas market from late November — one of the largest in Germany, with a tree reliably claimed to be the world's tallest decorated Christmas tree.
