Rüttenscheid — specifically Rüttenscheider Strasse — is Essen's best street for restaurants and bars, a lively strip of cafes, trattorias, Turkish restaurants, and wine bars that draws people from across the city. The area around the Museum Folkwang has benefited from the cultural investment in the district and has several good options.
Essen has a large Turkish community, a legacy of the guest worker programme that brought labour to the Ruhr's steel mills in the 1960s, and Turkish and Middle Eastern food is generally the most reliable and affordable eating option across the city.
