LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur

The Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History — to use its English name — is Münster's principal art museum and one of the better regional museums in Germany. The collection runs from medieval religious painting and sculpture through Renaissance and Baroque works to 20th-century pieces, with particular strength in the late Gothic art of Westphalia. The Cranach family is well represented, and there are good examples of the Expressionist movements — Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke — with works by August Macke, who was born in Westphalia.

The building itself is worth attention: a striking modernist extension opened in 2014 sits alongside the older structures around the Domplatz. The permanent collection is extensive; the museum also runs a strong programme of temporary exhibitions. Closed Mondays.
