Statue of the Nibelung villain sinking the treasure into the Rhine

A heroic-scale bronze of Hagen of Tronje, the antihero of the Nibelungenlied, in the moment of casting the Nibelung treasure into the Rhine. The statue (Johannes Hirt, 1905) stands on the embankment near the Nibelungenbrücke, just where the medieval story says Hagen sank the gold.

Worth a small detour — five minutes on foot from the Nibelungen Museum — for the open Rhine view as much as for the sculpture itself. The treasure, the story has it, is still down there.

A story
In the Nibelungenlied, Hagen of Tronje seizes the Nibelung treasure after murdering Siegfried and dumps it into the Rhine here at Worms — to keep it from Kriemhild. He alone knows the location and refuses to reveal it even under torture. The treasure has never been found.
