A vast Reformation tableau in bronze and stone, set in a small park north of the cathedral. Martin Luther stands central, surrounded by his pre-Reformation predecessors (Wycliffe, Hus, Savonarola, Waldo), the German princes who protected him, and seated female figures representing the great Protestant cities of Speyer, Augsburg, and Magdeburg.
Inaugurated in 1868 in a wave of pan-German Protestant nationalism. The monument is the largest of its kind in the world; whatever you think of the cause, the sculptural quality is high. The inscription around the base — "Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders" — repeats Luther's famous line from the Diet of Worms.
