Saarbrücken has a mild climate for Germany, moderated by its southern position and proximity to France. Spring and early summer are pleasant, and the St Johanner Markt comes alive with outdoor seating from April onwards. July and August can be hot — temperatures regularly reach 30°C. The Christmas market in December is one of the better ones in the region.
The city hosts the Max Ophüls Festival in January, a film festival focused on German-language cinema that brings a lively cultural atmosphere to the winter months. There is no particularly bad time to visit; the sights are all indoors or outdoor regardless of season.
