Saarbrücken's highlights cluster around two poles: the elegant baroque streetscape left by Friedrich Joachim Stengel — the Ludwigskirche, the castle square, the St Johanner Markt — and the industrial heritage of the Saar valley, most dramatically represented by the Völklinger Hütte ten kilometres downstream. Between these poles is a city that is considerably more interesting to walk around than its modest reputation suggests.
