Bautzen makes a useful base for the surrounding Upper Lusatia region. Görlitz, 50 km east on the Polish border, is the more spectacular of the two old towns and is well worth a half-day. Herrnhut, the home village of the Moravian Brethren church, is 40 minutes south. The Zittau Mountains and the spa town of Bad Schandau in Saxon Switzerland are within 90 minutes by car. The Spreewald, the network of waterways through the Sorbian heartland, is two hours north.
