By train, Bautzen is on the Dresden–Görlitz line, with hourly regional trains from Dresden (about an hour) and Görlitz (30 minutes). The Bautzen station is a 15-minute walk south of the old town.
By car, the A4 motorway runs just south of the city, 90 minutes east of Dresden, two and a half hours from Berlin, an hour from Prague via the border at Zinnwald.
By air, the nearest airports are Dresden (60 km west) and Prague (260 km south). There are no flights into Bautzen itself.
