The Kreuzkirche — Church of the Holy Cross — is Dresden's largest church and one of the oldest on the Altmarkt, the original market square. The current building dates mostly from the late 18th century, rebuilt after a succession of fires and wartime destruction; the tower is a distinctive mix of Baroque and Neoclassical styles that gives it a slightly unfinished look. Inside, the post-1945 rebuilding kept the walls deliberately bare, a stark Protestant simplicity that suits the scale of the nave.
The main reason to visit is the Kreuzchor — the Dresden Boys' Choir, one of the oldest in the world with roots going back to at least 1300. The choir performs the Saturday vespers service at 6pm through most of the year, and these free Saturday concerts are one of the best musical experiences Dresden offers. The choir tours internationally and regularly performs Bach's motets and cantatas in the exact building for which some of them were written.
The Kreuzkirche tower is open for climbing in good weather and gives the best elevated view over the Altmarkt and the old town roofline. The church is on the south side of the Altmarkt, a short walk from the Neumarkt and Frauenkirche.
