Senckenberg Museum of Natural History

The Senckenberg Museum for Natural History in Görlitz is one of the oldest and most significant natural history collections in Saxony, focused on the botany, zoology, and geology of the Upper Lusatia region and Central Europe more broadly. The museum occupies a handsome 18th-century building in the Old Town and has been part of the Frankfurt-based Senckenberg research network since 1993.

The museum is particularly strong on the plants and insects of Lusatia — a region with distinctive ecology due to its position between the Central European highlands and the North German plain. The geology collection covers the local chalk, sandstone, and basalt formations. It's a proper scientific collection rather than a flashy exhibition museum, which makes it more interesting rather than less if you have any curiosity about natural history.
