The Rathaus, built in the grandest German Renaissance style with elaborate gables, an asymmetrical tower, and the longest inscription to be found on any building in the world, dominates the Market Place. The ground floor retains its traditional function as a covered walkway with shops; the upper storeys now house the local-history museum. The main reason for going in is to see the 53-metre-long Festsaal on the first floor, with its ornate chimneypieces and haughty portraits of local mayors and Saxon dukes.
