Föhr

Föhr is the second largest of the North Frisian Islands and the most family-friendly — flatter, greener, and quieter than Sylt, with excellent cycling on flat roads through farmland and along the coast. The island is accessible by ferry from Dagebüll on the mainland. Wyk auf Föhr, the main town, is a dignified Bäderarchitektur resort with 19th-century houses along a promenade.

The island has an unusually high density of historic Frisian village churches — many dating to the 12th and 13th centuries, with remarkable painted interiors. The Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum focuses on art depicting the North Sea coast and is one of the better regional art museums in Schleswig-Holstein. Föhr also has one of the largest Frisian-speaking communities in Germany; the North Frisian language (Fering on Föhr) is still spoken here by older residents.
