The Wadden Sea is the defining experience here. At low tide you can walk across the seabed between islands — a guided mudflat hike (Wattwanderung) is the most distinctive activity in the region and impossible to replicate elsewhere. Each island also has its own character: Sylt for beach life and dunes, Föhr for cycling and village churches, Amrum for wide white beaches, the halligen for something wilder and more remote.
