The Museum Kunst der Westküste (Museum of West Coast Art) in Alkersum on Föhr is one of the more surprising cultural institutions in this part of Germany — a purpose-built museum dedicated to art depicting the North Sea coast, from Dutch Golden Age marine paintings through to contemporary works. The collection spans several centuries and multiple national traditions, reflecting the fact that the North Sea has been a subject for artists across northern Europe for centuries.
The building itself is thoughtfully designed, set into the Föhr landscape and making good use of natural light. The permanent collection is augmented by temporary exhibitions, and the museum café is a pleasant stop regardless of interest in the art. Combined with a cycling tour of the island, it makes for a full day on Föhr.
