Göltzsch Viaduct

The Göltzsch Viaduct stands a short drive south-east of Greiz, near Mylau in Saxony. Built in the mid-19th century to carry the Leipzig–Hof railway across the Göltzsch valley, it remains the largest brick bridge in the world.

You can walk under the arches and along the valley below; an observation point and a small café near Netzschkau give a wide view of the structure. Trains still cross it several times an hour.

A story
Completed in 1851, the Göltzsch Viaduct is the largest brick-built bridge in the world: 78 metres high, 574 metres long, with 81 arches in four tiers. Around 26 million bricks went into it. The railway line above is still in regular use, and you can walk to the base of the piers for a sense of the scale.
