Bauhaus Museum

World's oldest Bauhaus collection in a centenary museum

Opened in 2019 for the Bauhaus centenary, this purpose-built museum on the Stéphane-Hessel-Platz houses the world's oldest Bauhaus collection — ceramics, furniture, typography, textiles, and paintings from the school's Weimar years. The building itself is a considered piece of design: a long glass and concrete rectangle that sits lightly in the park. Allow two hours minimum; the collection is richer than it looks from outside.

A story
The Bauhaus was founded in Weimar in 1919, but the school was forced out by a right-wing regional government in 1925 and moved to Dessau, then to Berlin, where it was finally shut by the Nazis in 1933. The Weimar museum opened in 2019, exactly a century after the founding, and holds the world's oldest Bauhaus collection.
