Schiller Museum

Where Schiller wrote William Tell and the Ode to Joy

Address Schillerstraße 12, 99423 Weimar

Schiller moved to Weimar in 1799, drawn partly by Goethe's presence, and lived in this yellow townhouse on the Schillerstrasse until his death in 1805. The house is smaller and less grand than Goethe's, which suits Schiller's more straitened circumstances. His workroom, where he wrote William Tell and the Ode to Joy (later set by Beethoven), is preserved as he left it. Worth seeing alongside the Goethe house to understand the friendship between the two men.

A story
Schiller wrote best at night, often working until dawn fueled by coffee and the smell of rotting apples he kept in his desk drawer — he claimed the scent helped him concentrate. He died in the house in 1805, aged just 45, probably of tuberculosis.
