Monastery of Panagia Chrysoleontissa

Fortified 17th-century monastery high in the hills at the quiet centre of Aegina.

Panagia Chrysoleontissa sits inland, away from Aegina's harbour traffic and beach villages, in the hilly middle of the island. The monastery was founded around the 17th century as a safer home for a revered icon of the Virgin, after coastal monastic sites proved too exposed to pirate raids. Its thick walls and enclosed courtyard still make it feel part sanctuary, part refuge.

The journey is half the reason to go. Roads climb through dry slopes and pine patches, opening occasional views back toward the Saronic Gulf. Inside, the mood is quiet and devotional rather than museum-like; dress modestly, keep voices low, and give yourself time to let the silence do its work.
