Platanos Taverna

One of Plaka's oldest tavernas, open since 1932, under a plane tree in a quiet square

Platanos has been operating in a small square in Plaka since 1932, named after the plane tree that shades the outdoor tables. The cooking is straightforward traditional Greek: grilled lamb chops, slow-cooked rabbit stifado, moussaka, and a rotating set of daily specials written on a board. The wine comes in ceramic jugs and the service is unhurried.

It is the kind of place that could trade on its history and serve mediocre food to tourists, but the food is genuinely good and the prices remain fair. The square itself, Diogenous, is one of the quieter corners of Plaka — worth finding for a long lunch.
