Spinalonga is a small fortified island in the Gulf of Elounda, close enough to Agios Nikolaos for an easy boat trip but rich enough to feel like a separate chapter of Cretan history. Venetian walls, Ottoman-era settlement traces, and the later leper-colony story all sit within a compact shoreline circuit.
The island is popular, so early or late boats are more atmospheric than the middle of the day. Bring water and a hat, and give yourself time to read the site as more than a scenic ruin; Spinalonga's power comes from the overlap of beauty, isolation, and difficult human history.
