When to Go

Agios Nikolaos is at its most crowded in July and August, when temperatures regularly exceed 35°C and the beaches fill. The town is lively and the marina hosts sailing regattas, but accommodation prices peak and booking ahead is essential.

May, June, and September are far more comfortable. The sea is warm, the crowds are manageable, and the countryside around the town is at its most beautiful. September in particular is excellent — harvest season in the olive groves, the sea still warm from summer, and the Lassithi plateau a short drive away turning golden.

October and November bring cooler temperatures and occasional rain but the archaeological sites are uncrowded and prices drop significantly. The town stays open — unlike some Greek resort towns that close completely in winter. December to March is quiet, and while the weather is mild by northern European standards (10–15°C), the beaches and many restaurants are shut.
