Archaeological Museum of Hania

Minoan artefacts from western Crete, in a collection relocated to new premises in 2022

The Archaeological Museum of Hania has a good collection of Minoan and later artefacts from western Crete — pottery, jewellery, Linear A tablets, figurines, and grave goods spanning the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period. The museum moved to new premises on Skra Street in 2022 after decades in the old Venetian church of Agios Fragkiskos near the harbour.

The Minoan material is the highlight: western Crete had its own distinct Bronze Age culture, somewhat different from the great Minoan palaces of Knossos and Phaistos, and the museum documents it well. Allow 90 minutes. The collection is modest in scale compared to Heraklion's Archaeological Museum but significantly less crowded.
