Lychnostatis Open-Air Museum

Lychnostatis is a small private open-air museum on the cliff at the eastern edge of Hersonissos, built by a Cretan academic on his family's old land as a deliberate record of traditional rural life on the island. Stone houses contain original furniture, hand-loomed textiles, and household tools; a working windmill, an olive press, a raki distillery, a herb garden, and a small chapel are spread across a couple of hectares of terraced land overlooking the sea.

Allow an hour to walk it. Demonstrations of weaving and raki distilling run on a posted schedule in season, and there is a small cafe that serves Cretan mountain tea, paximadia, and home-made marmalades. It is the most honest piece of slow tourism on this stretch of coast.
