Cretan cuisine is among the best in Greece — heavy on olive oil, wild greens, legumes, and simply grilled meat and fish. The local cheeses (graviera, anthotiro, mizithra) are excellent; so is the wine from the Peza and Archanes appellations south of the city. The 1866 Street market is the place to buy provisions; the area around the old harbour has the highest concentration of restaurants, though quality varies widely.
