Koules Fortress

Venetian sea fortress guarding the old harbour entrance

Address Old Harbour, Iraklion
Admission €4
Opening Hours Tue–Sun 8:30am–3:30pm

The great Venetian sea fortress at the entrance to the old harbour, built between 1523 and 1540 and named Castello a Mare by the Venetians. From the top there are excellent views over the harbour, the city, and — on clear days — north toward the Greek mainland. Three large stone lions (the symbol of St Mark, patron of Venice) are set into the seaward wall. The interior is largely empty but the structure itself is impressive.

Walk out along the old Venetian mole to reach it; the promenade along the harbour front is the main evening passeggiata for Iraklion residents.
