Neradje Mosque

The Neradje Mosque is the most visually distinctive building in the Rethimno old town — a large 17th-century Ottoman mosque whose tall minaret has been the city's skyline landmark for nearly 400 years. Built partly on the foundations of an earlier Venetian church, the building is now used as a concert hall and exhibition venue rather than a place of worship.

The exterior, with its striped stonework and the elegant minaret rising above the old town roofscape, is best seen from the harbour side. The interior, when open for events, is a beautiful domed space. It stands in the heart of the old town, within a few minutes' walk of the harbour and the Fortezza access road.

A story
The Neradje Mosque was built by the Ottomans in the 17th century using the structure of a Venetian church as its base. The minaret, one of three that originally stood in Rethimno, is the only one still standing and is the city's most prominent landmark. The building has never been returned to religious use since the population exchange of 1923 removed Rethimno's Muslim community.
