Rethimno makes an excellent base for exploring western and central Crete. Chania is 55 km west and arguably the most beautiful city in Crete, with its own Venetian harbour and old town that rewards a full day. Heraklion to the east has the excellent Heraklion Archaeological Museum and provides access to Knossos, the great Minoan palace. The Samaria Gorge — one of Europe's longest — is accessible from Chania as a day excursion.
