Rethimno's old town is compact enough to cover on foot in a day but rich enough to reward several days of wandering. The Fortezza and the harbour are the main set-pieces; the mosque-and-minaret streetscape of the old town is what makes the city distinctive. The long sandy beach east of town is excellent for swimming from spring through October.
